The valley passes through the wettest position in Sonoma County, capturing the water once kept cool all summer long by the heavily wooded slopes. Before the Walbridge fire, Mill Creek was the most productive place in the watershed to test for severely damaged coho salmon. Twenty miles southeast of Hatchery, Mill Creek empties into the rugged Coast Range at Dry Creek. Downstream from the burnt dam, the landscape along the creek opens up to endless rows of vines.

Despite its name, Dry Creek is now one of the only drought-prone streams in the basin that flows reliably year-round. A steep concrete channel discharges water from the reservoir at Dry Creek and feeds into the hatchery. The hatchery is located at the foot of the Sonoma Lake Land Dam, which is still black due to a recent burning led by the Army Corps to prevent the roots of the plants from weakening their structure. For nearly 20 years, Warm Springs has experienced a migration of the coho into a basin that no longer has a completely wild population of the species. Almost all of them are descended from these last wild fish that were caught between 20. Some were born in the Warm Springs hatchery, others in the river, spawned through fish born in the hatchery.

Today, between 5 cohos return to the Russian River in winter to spawn. On the Russian River, the lunar intervention tries to keep the population alive.

The species is extinct or on the verge of extinction at three locations in central California, the southernmost boundary of the cohoвЂ™s wild range. Over the next 3 years, a coalition of county, state, and federal agencies took the basinвЂ™s last young coho into captivity at Warm Springs Fish Hatchery, near Sonoma Lake, 30 miles inland from shore. By 1988, the number had been reduced by 95%. вЂќ The intricate landscape of oak-studded hills and steep canyons that was once a haven for locally adapted salmon and rainbow trout now provides the local wine with its unique terroir.ДЄ century ago, about 20,000 cohos, a species of salmon known to spawn even in the smallest streams, returned to the Russian River and its triyetaries in a typical year. By 2012, vineyards and wineries had become the dominant industry in Sonoma County, which is part of the larger region that the tourism industry calls вЂњwine country. Scattered throughout the basin, 500 small dams also prevented coho from reaching vital spawning tributaries. In the 1950s and early 1980s, the US Army Corps of Engineers dammed the Russian River to flood Lake Mendocino and Lake Sonoma reservoirs, blocking fish habitat. So much gravel was dug out of the river, some of which was used to build the Golden Gate Bridge, that in some places the creek bed dropped to the height of a two-story house. ItвЂ™s an hourвЂ™s drive north of San Francisco, close enough that the cityвЂ™s first buildings were built from redwoods transported from this watershed. Mill Creek is a component of the Russian River watershed, which drains 1,400 square miles of Sonoma and Mendocino counties. Not that this corner of California was pristine before the record-breaking 2020 smokestack season. вЂњItвЂ™s like weвЂ™re at the end of the world,вЂќ Ruiz says, recalling that sweet October day. Even the cries of birds rarely disturb the calm. They were accompanied through a four box team of people, all committed to saving a population of cohos, one of the most endangered salmon on the west coast of North America. Black hair under a protective helmet, Ford boots lifting ashes, Ruiz conscientiously climbed the steep shore toward Mill Creek. Ruiz, a biologist with the California Sea Grant science agency, adjusted the N95 mask to protect himself from fog. Patches of dirt were still burning due to the Walbridge Fire, which had set the valley on fire seven weeks earlier, in August 2020.
